Side Hustle Statistics 2026: Why 9-to-5 Workers Want Extra Income and Do Not Know Where to Start

October 26, 2026by Rapid Launch Biz

The demand is not theoretical.

It is one of the largest consumer categories in the country.

And the single most important number in all of the research below is this one:

When Americans were asked what was stopping them from starting a side income, the top answer was not knowing where to start, at 45%.

Read that twice.

The number one obstacle in this market is the absence of a map.

The demand is already measured

This is pre-existing demand.

It has been counted by censuses, industry studies, and surveys.

Millions of people are already filing, selling, coaching, and planning, right now.

Business formation is at an all-time high

Americans filed 5.67 million new business applications in 2025.

That was a record.

2026 is tracking toward roughly 6.2 million, almost 10% above that.

Most of those filers are solo

Only about 9.5% of those applications ever become an employer business with payroll.

Roughly nine out of ten people filing are solo operators.

That is the buyer in this market.

Filing paperwork. Right now. By the millions.

Direct selling already has millions of people in it

The 2026 DSEF Growth & Outlook Study reported $34.2 billion in U.S. direct selling retail sales during 2025.

That activity was supported by 34.8 million customers and 5.2 million direct sellers.

Of those sellers, 4.8 million worked part-time.

Five million Americans are already doing a version of this.

That is mainstream behavior, with a measured census behind it.

Business coaching is a $20 billion industry with no owner

IBISWorld puts the U.S. business coaching market at $20.0 billion in 2026, across 75,590 businesses.

The industry is highly fragmented.

No company holds more than 5% market share.

People pay for this kind of instruction in enormous volume.

And nobody owns the category.

The appetite is forward-looking

55% of Americans say they are likely to start a side hustle within the next year.

QuickBooks found that 40% plan to start a new business or side hustle in 2026.

The want is current.

And it is pointed at the year in front of us.

The top barrier is not knowing where to start

Kickresume asked Americans what was actually stopping them from starting a side income.

Kickresume also asked what would motivate them to begin.

The answers point to the same gap, from two different sides.

45% said not knowing where to start

The top answer for what was stopping them was not knowing where to start, at 45%.

41% said extra income would motivate them

When asked what would motivate them to begin, the most common answer was simply extra income, at 41%.

That is the entire answer to why a 9-to-5 worker would buy digital marketing education.

The want is already there, and measured.

The path is what is missing.

And the path is literally the product.

The purchase that makes sense to this worker is the removal of the 45% problem.

A clear first move.

In the right order.

An Amazon affiliate sells to someone who already knows they want a blender.

This market sells to someone who already knows they want more money, and has no idea what the first move is.

Both are pre-existing demand.

This one just presents differently, for anyone who chooses to enter the home business space.

The Amazon comparison is backwards

Amazon is usually framed as the comfortable, obvious-demand model.

Look closer at what that demand actually pays.

Amazon commission rates have trended down for a decade

Amazon rates are fixed by category.

They have trended down for a decade.

The average commission rate peaked around 9.25% in mid-2012 and has fallen to nearly a third of that.

The 24-hour cookie window is tight compared to most affiliate programs.

The model combines huge demand with shrinking margins, one-day attribution, and no recurring revenue.

The broader affiliate channel is healthy

U.S. advertisers will spend $13.81 billion on affiliate marketing in 2026.

That is up 11.3% from $12.42 billion in 2025, per eMarketer.

That growth rate sits well above the 6.7% growth of U.S. retail e-commerce overall.

So the trade looks like this:

Amazon gives volume and takes margin.

A model built on margin asks for a fraction of that volume.

Those are different businesses.

Comfort with one should not be the benchmark for the other.

Why workers age 30 and up are the right audience

The 30-and-up demographic is the right call for this market.

The financial data explains why.

Real wages went backwards

From April 2025 to April 2026, nominal wages grew 3.6%.

Inflation rose 3.8%.

The raise shrank.

A worker can do everything right, get the raise, and still have less than they had the year before.

That is arithmetic.

Paycheck to paycheck hits the middle bracket hard

63% of Americans report living paycheck to paycheck.

Among households earning $50,000 to $99,999, that figure is 64%.

And 90% of paycheck-to-paycheck households have less than $500 left over each month after expenses, per the CNBC / SurveyMonkey Quarterly Money Survey.

The target earner in this market sits in the hardest-performing bracket.

Earning a real salary.

Covering real bills.

And still finishing the month with almost nothing left over.

Gen X is the most financially driven generation

Gen X is the most financially driven generation in the data, at 55%.

Millennials sit at 48%.

Gen Z sits at 45%, per Kickresume.

The pattern suggests the older a worker gets, the more a side income becomes about closing a real financial gap.

Everyone else in this space chases Gen Z.

The data shows the serious money motive sits with the older worker.

Making content is not the scarce skill

A lot of people ask if they can actually make content.

They treat that question as the barrier.

The numbers say the barrier sits somewhere else.

162 million Americans identify as content creators

162 million Americans now identify as content creators, per DemandSage.

The ability to make content is widely available.

Most people already know AI can help make videos.

Leading with that angle tells a worker something they already know.

Only 11% of side hustlers reach $1,000 per month

Only 11% of side hustlers ever reach $1,000 per month.

Just 2% exceed $5,000.

The average is pulled up by a small pool of high earners, while the median sits at $200 per month, per Podbase.

Millions of people are producing content.

Almost none of them have anywhere for it to go.

The skill gap closed. The structure gap stayed open.

That gap is a story worth opening with honestly.

In an industry built on hype, the person who opens with the fact that 89% of side hustlers never clear $1,000 a month, and then explains the structural reasons why, is taking a position nobody else is willing to take.

Six research-backed facts

Each of these is a factual observation from the research above.

None of them is a claim about what any reader will earn.

45% say not knowing where to start is stopping them

Nobody is sitting at their kitchen table deciding they do not want more money.

45% say the thing stopping them is not knowing where to start.

Wage growth sat below inflation

You got a raise this year and have less than you did last year.

3.6% versus 3.8%.

That is arithmetic, not a feeling.

64% of the $50,000 to $100,000 bracket lives paycheck to paycheck

Fifty to a hundred thousand a year is the hardest place to be right now.

64% of that bracket is living paycheck to paycheck.

5.67 million business applications were filed, and 9 out of 10 will stay solo

Last year Americans filed 5.67 million applications to start a business.

Nine out of ten of them will never hire an employee.

Normal working people are quietly starting something solo.

162 million Americans make content, and most have nowhere for it to go

162 million Americans make content.

Almost none of them have a structure behind it.

The skill gap closed.

The structure gap did not.

89% of people with a side income never clear $1,000 a month

Eighty-nine percent of people with a side income never clear a thousand a month.

Open honestly with this stat.

Then explain why it happens, structurally.

Participation surveys disagree, and intent has not softened

One nuance keeps this honest.

Participation numbers are not uniformly up, and surveys disagree widely on the exact rate.

Participation was 33% in the LendingTree 2026 survey

LendingTree's 2026 survey found side hustle participation at 33%.

That is down from 38% the prior year, and 44% in 2022.

One explanation offered is that inflation squeezed budgets, leaving people with less money available to put toward starting something.

Bankrate's methodology lands near 45%.

Omnisend sits near 28%.

55% say they are likely to start within a year

Intent has not softened while some participation numbers moved down.

55% say they are likely to start within a year.

And 63% of people running a small business, side hustle, or freelance venture hope it becomes their full-time job, per Business Wire.

Desire remains high and stable.

Follow-through is the real bottleneck.

And that brings the whole page back to the 45% problem.

How HBA bridges the gap

This is where the research connects to a specific system.

The data above describes a worker who wants extra income, has limited time after a shift, and is stopped mainly by the absence of a clear path.

A useful offer for that worker has to answer that exact problem first.

HBA gives a beginner a starting point

The Home Business Academy, founded in 2016, was built as a system of tools and training a member works from in order.

Done-for-you pages and sales pages, an AI assistant, and follow-up emails are coded to the member from day one.

A new person begins with something already built to work from, while they learn how the pieces fit.

That structure speaks directly to the 45% answer.

A worker does not have to research every tool, connect every piece, and invent a sequence before taking a first step.

The first step is named.

The next steps sit behind it.

A suggested starting path for a 9-to-5 worker

The suggested start for a worker building alongside a job is simple.

Begin with Let's Goal, the $10 planner and routine app.

Then add the Funnel Builder.

That order starts with organizing the day and the goal.

Then it moves to the page that gives content and sharing somewhere to go.

Keeping the job while building matters in this bridge.

The research describes workers protecting guaranteed income while they test a side income, and a system built in steps fits that reality better than a leap.

Content gets a place to go

The research also describes millions of creators with nowhere for their content to go.

Inside HBA, content points to a page, a funnel, and an offer that already exists in the member's system.

The page gives the content a job.

The system gives a new creator structure behind the posting.

HBA's compensation plan is a stated system fact: the plan pays 80% commissions, with commissions paid weekly on Thursdays.

Those are facts about how the plan is structured.

They are not a promise about what any individual member will earn, and results vary by person and effort.

For the worker in the data, the bridge is plain.

The want for extra income is already there.

The wage math is already squeezing the month.

What HBA is positioned to provide is the missing middle: a starting point, a built page, tools in one system, and an order to follow while keeping the job that pays the bills.

P.S. If you are in that 45%, the next step is not more research about whether people want this. The numbers already answered that. The next step is looking at a path with a first move on it. The links are on my page.
